The Kelpie is a supernatural shape shifting water spirit with an insatiable appetite for humans. Its most common guise is that of a beautiful tame horse standing by the river bank. A tempting ride for any weary traveller. Anybody foolish enough to mount the horse would find themselves in deep s*!t, as the horse would rear up and charge headlong into the depths, submerging with a noise like thunder taking the rider to a watery grave. The Kelpie also warned of impending storms by wailing and howling, which would carry on through the tempest.
